Become a Health Coach

Have you ever made a decision that people questioned you on, yet you knew in your heart it was the right one? I have. It was when I decided to get serious about my health and then pay it forward by sharing what I do with others. I remember my family and friends questioning how I was going to be able to be a Mom to our 9 children AND still be able to balance all that with adding in 5-10 hours each week helping others get healthy. It was our goal from the beginning to make this into a family business where we could bring Duane home. People genuinely were happy for us, but in the back of their minds they were skeptical and even thought that we’d be in the poor house soon enough having lost everything.

For 6 years Duane was commuting to CA every Monday morning and flying back home late Friday evening. I was a single parent during the week. We were both exhausted, stressed, unhealthy and, sadly, we were not living like a family. We were on the proverbial hamster wheel thinking if we just keep going it will get better. One month into our weight loss journey, it was as if the lights came on. Duane asked himself, “What am I doing to my family all in the name of providing for my family?” He gave a 4-month notice and came home FOR GOOD one year ago in June. Now we are a family living together all week long! We are parents first and we health coaches after that. Duane is also doing some accounting work from home. We truly are living our dream because we stepped out in faith and said enough is enough already! We want more out of life! Our kids were growing up so fast, and we were missing the mark thinking things will change someday.

We have found great joy in what started out as a dream: getting healthy ourselves and now helping people get fit and healthy. I’m often asked how I was able to turn what started out as a “lets get healthy” goal into a way to help support our family and what allowed Duane to walk away from his amazing career. The answer is simple: we had a dream and a heart to help others and the use of the Internet and social media.

When I grew up in the 80’s, we didn’t have Internet or cell phones (yes, I’m dating myself.) I remember only being married for a few years in the 90’s when my husband had a computer and had a whopping email list of 5 friends on compu-serve. I thought it was such a waste of time!  I couldn’t understand WHY. After all, I could just type or write a note to my friends! It makes me laugh now to think about it. I didn’t understand then how our lives were going to drastically change.

We live in a culture today that is completely connected via the Internet. We can Skype someone halfway across the world. We can easily share photos, videos, and ideas with the click of a mouse. We can create a cyber-space that is ours alone and put our stamp of individuality on it. As busy as we all are, we can do all of this on our own time schedule in our own space. The technology today is crazy and amazing.

When people in my town find out that I’m a health coach, the next question is typically “Do you go to people’s homes or do they come to you?” They find it hard to believe that, no, I actually coach people all across the United States using my computer and a smart phone. As a result, I’ve been able to reach and help so many more people than I ever could if I depended only on those I met face to face all while creating freedom for myself and for my family. It’s completely a win-win situation.

I want give people hope again that they can be healthy because I’ve seen, first hand, the results of obesity. I was obese for many years even though I just saw myself as heavy or overweight. I’ve seen the toll that it takes on the family unit. Because of our fast-paced lifestyle today, people need to be able to tap into support when they can fit it in. To learn and grow and make those changes at their pace while they are in their own home. I help others with learning how to fuel their bodies well and give the motivation and support that is so necessary for success. I can do this when I’m sitting outside on my deck watching my children build their fort or sitting at my desk or even when we are on vacation. As long as I have an internet connection and my smart phone, I’m in business!

I don’t know where you are in your life. You may be completely content with your current situation and the amount of time you spend with your family. You may NOT be working 40+ hours a week just to make ends meet. I sincerely applaud you. On the other hand, if you aren’t happy with your current situation, I’m here to tell you that there is another way. If you have a love for people and a desire to help others, we should talk. If a tired, overweight, homeschooling Mom of 9 can get healthy and turn it into a way to bring Daddy home…so can you!!

Better Together,

Tricia ♥
